Papers of Nancy Byrd Turner.

The collection contains manuscripts and printed versions of many of Turner's poems, short stories, articles and plays; examples of her poems set to music; notes and notebooks; diaries and miscellaneous autobiographical materials; a biography of her by the Reverend Melvin Lee Steadman, Jr.; and manuscripts of her sister Elizabeth Thornton Turner. The collection also contains the personal and professional correspondence of Turner and other members of the Turner family, including permissions files; together with correspondence of Steadman, her literary executor. In addition to literary matters topics include Centreville Methodist Church, the Conrad family including the deaths of Holmes and Tucker Conrad at 1st Bull Run, the Blue Ridge Industrial School, and Nazi propaganda in Wisconsin. There are also transcripts of letters from Eliza Jacquelin "Betsy" Ambler to Ann "Nancy" Ambler Fisher, 1796-1823. In addition there are clippings; memorabilia; biographical sketches; book reviews; Turner genealogical material; lecture notes; photographs; files on the Hannah More Academy and the MacDowell Colony; and seven phonodisk records, chiefly of Turner reading her own poems. Major correspondents include Katherine Lee Bates, Abbie Farwell Brown, Charles W. Cadman, Anne Getchel, her governess Miss John Francis Ham, Bert Henderson, M.A. De Wolfe Howe, Helen Howe, Mabel and Eleanor Johnson, Marian MacDowell, Harry M. Meacham, E.A. Robinson, Robert H. Schauffler, Ellery Sedgwick, Florence Dickinson Stearns, Emma Gray Trigg, Ulrich Troubetzkoy, Frederic Viaux and Edward Weeks.
